Fourth Generation of Computers
1971 - Present
1971 - Present
In the various stages of evolution of computers till fourth generation, the focus has been on reducing the size and increasing the efficiency, which resulted in smaller yet faster computers.
Characteristics:
They use microprocessors invented by Dr. Ted Hoff, a type of very-large-scale-integrated circuits (VLSIC) which contain all the components of a CPU on a single chip.
The VLSIC's perform the bulk of processing and control all parts of the system.
The use of microprocessors have resulted in decreased size and increased efficiency.
The y have much greater computing power and storage capacity than the earlier generations of computer.
They use improved storage devices , cheaper than the earlier ones.
They can be linked together, i.e. networked to share storage capacity, space and data.
